Aims and Scope

Nonsmooth problems arise in industry and everyday life. Some simple examples are the contact problems which arise in the automotive industry and metal forming as well as in the various manufacturing settings involving electrical circuits and smart materials, including piezoelectric materials. The study of nonsmooth problems requires advanced results in modelling, analysis, control and numerical approximation. The resulting models are expressed in terms of challenging mathematical problems. For all these reasons, the mathematical literature in the field is extensive. The aim of this conference is to present the state of the art in the mathematical treatment of nonsmooth problems and their applications.
The topics of the conference include (but are not limited to)

  1. fixed point problems
  2. nonlinear operators
  3. variational and hemivariational inequalities
  4. abstract inclusions and sweeping processes
  5. nonlinear boundary value problems
  6. optimization problems
  7. optimal control
  8. numerical methods
  9. applications in solid, fluid and contact mechanics
  10. real word applications in industry, transportation, mechanics of materials

The results presented during this conference are supposed to include existence and uniqueness results in the study of new classes of nonsmooth problems expressed in terms of fixed points, inclusions, variational and hemivariational inequalities. Well-posedness results will be also discussed, together with their applications, which allow one to obtain the continuous dependence of solutions with respect to the data and to establish a link between various nonsmooth problems with a different structure. Particular attention will be paid to the optimal control of these problems for which, due to the insufficient regularity of the solution, very few results are known in the literature. The numerical analysis of the corresponding problems, including error estimates and convergence results for spatially discrete and fully discrete schemes will play an important role in the conference topics.

The Conference is under the auspices of the Stefan Banach International Center and is a continuation of the successful ETAMM2016 conference which held in 2016 in Perpignan, France and ETAMM2018 conference which held in 2018 in Krakow, Poland.
